Ecological boundaries in estuaries: macrobenthic ß-diversity in the Rio de la Plata system (34-36°S) OceanDocs
Giberto, D.A.; Bremec, C.; Cortelezzi, A.; Rodrigues Capitulo, A.; Brazeiro, A..
In this study, we analyse spatial patterns of macrobenthic communities of the Río de la Plata system, and assess the species turnover or beta diversity and its relationship with environmental gradients. Macrobenthic samples and physico-chemical parameters were collected from 20 sampling sites along a transect of 560 km, including the freshwater (FW), estuarine (ES)and marine (MA)sectors. Three main assemblages corresponding to the above mentioned sectors were defined with multivariate analysis (cluster, MDS). In total 134 taxa were recorded, 81 in MA, 33 in FW and 38 in ES, represented mainly by polychaete, mollusc and crustacean species. Depth, salinity and clay showed the strongest correlation with the observed faunal patterns (pw=0.62; BIO-ENV...

Estructura poblacional del gatuzo (Mustelus shmitti) en la costa bonaerense y uruguaya asociada a condiciones oceanográficas. OceanDocs
Massa, A.M..
The gatuzo, Mustelus schmitti, lives in the Southamerican Atlantic coastal waters from up to 23°S (Brazil)down to 47°S (Argentine), and is the greatest species of the Bonaerense and North Patagonian shores. This species is the most exploited elasmobranch of this region, within the last six years catch has exceeded 10,000 t per year and it is vulnerable to overexploitation due to reproductive aspects, with a low rate of changes, as well as distribution patterns. In order to relate size distribution and nursery areas, and environmental temperature and salinity variability, were obtained within six INIDEP 'Coastal Project' research cruises from 34° to 42°S from boundaries to 50 mts isobaths, during the spring seasons between 1994 to 1997. Cluster analysis...

Bruno, Daniel O..
The role of the Mar Chiquita lagoon and its adjacent coastal area as nursery ground for fish larvae and juveniles and the factors which regulate their recruitment process, was evaluated. To do so, we analyzed the fish early life stages composition and spatio-temporal variation over the marine-estuarine gradient of the lagoon and its relationship with environmental factors; the diel variation of these stages in the immediate area at the mouth of the lagoon; and the source of the organic carbon which feed them on the mouth of the lagoon and adjacent coastal area, by using stable isotope analysis. The richness and mean density of larvae were higher at the offshore area than at the lagoon. Inside the lagoon the dominant species in larval stage was Brevoortia...

Relations between bacterial extracellular enzyme activities and heterotrophic substrate uptake in a brackishwater environment. ArchiMer
Hoppe, H.
Extracellular enzymes mediate the decomposition of polymeric organic compounds in natural waters. In many cases these enzymes comprise a component linked to the bacterial fraction of the aquatic community and react in close association with these cells. An annual survey of microbial activities in a brackish water fjord exhibited an excellent correlation between V sub(m) of proteases (ability to split the substrate analogue methylumbelliferyl-leucine) and V sub(m) as well as T sub(R) for leucine uptake by microorganisms. Hydrolysis rates (H sub(R)) for the decomposition of naturally occurring competitive substrate analogues of the model substrates (methylumbelliferyl-(MUF)-leucine, MUF- alpha -D-glucose, MUF-N-acetyl-glucosamine, MUF-phosphate) drastically...

Sampling for a bacteriological study of aquatic enrironments ArchiMer
Troussellier, M; Baleux, B; Andre, P.
Using water samples from several observation levels of a brackish lagoon, statistical solutions are offered for the sampling optimisation of bacteria viable counts. The variability between plate count is studied by the mean of the Taylor's power law. The sampling strategy optimisation, including several sources of variability, is realized by hierarchical analysis of variance and the estimation of the sampling cost of each source. This optimisation procedure results in a great increase of the relative efficiency of the sampling design and allow to obtain significant differences between the bacterial concentrations. The effect of the reduction of the total sampling effort on the precision of these average concentrations pointed out the scientific and...

Studies of the life-history and energetics of marine and brackish-water nematodes: 1. Demography of <i>Monhystera disjuncta</i> at different temperature and feeding conditions OMA
Vranken, G.; Herman, P.M.J.; Heip, C.H.R..
Aspects of the demography of <i>Monhystera disjuncta</i> were investigated at different feeding conditions (monoxenic cultures with different bacterial strains, and different densities in the feeding suspension with one strain). Embryonic development time, minimum generation time, egg deposition rate and adult longevity depend on temperature, quality and quantity of food offered. Body mass at maturity is an allometric function of food density. It is shown that a previously inferred selectivity in food uptake is an artifact of culture conditions. pH buffering and addition of sterols permit culture of the species on a wide variety of bacterial strains. <i>M. disjuncta</i> is less well adapted to take advantage of high food density...

Studies of the life-history and energetics of marine and brackish-water nematodes: 2. Production, respiration and food uptake by <i>Monhystera disjuncta</i> OMA
Herman, P.M.J.; Vranken, G..
An energy budget was constructed for the marine nematode <i>Monhystera disjuncta</i>. Respiration was measured with a modified Cartesian diver technique, in which the nematodes were kept in agar inside the diver 'head'. The relationship between respiration and body weight was: R=1.53 W0.75. Body growth was exponential during the juvenile phase, with a growth rate equal to 0.61 d-1. After maturation the growth rate fell to 0,17 d-1. Food uptake was measured in experiments with radiolabeled bacteria. In one series of experiments the accumulation of radiolabel in the nematodes was followed. In a second series the decrease in labeling was followed when pre-labeled nematodes fed on...

Tramas tróficas en sistemas frontales del Mar Argentino: estructura, dinámica y complejidad analizada mediante isótopos estables OceanDocs
Gaitán, E.N..
Two of the most important frontal systems of the Argentine Sea (SW Atlantic Ocean) were compared to obtain evidences on the regulatory mechanisms of food web length, incorporating both spatial (areas within fronts) and temporal (presence or absence of frontal structure) variability. The stable isotopes of Carbon and Nitrogen were used to evaluate the origin and composition of the organic matter used by primary consumers, the structure of food webs, the trophic levels of several taxa and the benthic-pelagic coupling within each system. In the Río de la Plata estuarine front, different sources of organic matter would support the food webs occurring in the three areas of the system. The particulate organic material (POM) would be the main resource supporting...
